Hi Minga, I was so surprised to see this. In 1981 or so, Mt. Toby (my meeting then) joined many religious groups in our community in welcoming two Guatemalan brothers who came to us through the sanctuary movement. They are from Esquipulas and still live in the valley. They shared pictures of the town and of el Cristo Negro. It must have been wonderful to see it in person. Love, Suzy

Minga
Thanks for sharing these recollections. My godmother was in the first class of WAVES, women in the Navy, signing up for WWII. After the war she became a Quaker but remained proud of her service. I think we don't really understand the threat to freedom people in this country perceived Hitler to be and the united national spirit that existed within which everyone did their part. These times are so completely different and the possibility of coming together truly as a nation are only glimpsed in moments of great tragedy such as 911 and even then we were not united in our response. Perhaps more conversations with elders from that era to better understand being Quaker and being a pilot in the military. Thanks for raising the insight.

Thank you for the witness and the memories you bring back to us. Accurate information and fair compassionate visions are so vital in this land of heartbreak...as they are in Newtown Connecticut. Fascinating and sad parallels, yes?
